Capturing a Moment

Capturing a Moment

by John Anderson

The photographer Tim Clinch (mentioned in my previous post) writes a regular column in a photography magazine and comes across as being a bit grumpy. When we got to meet him at the Black and White Photography Magazine workshop I expected him to be a bit cynical – especially as a seasoned pro who has been taking pictures for forty years. The opposite was true and in his introduction to the portraiture workshop he commented on what a privilege it is to be able to take pictures – not least as you have the opportunity to create something magic and original – potentially every time you pick up your camera!

It got me thinking why I am so drawn to photography. For me (as a bit of a romantic) I love to capture a moment or an emotion – maybe in part, in an attempt to cheat time! I also love when the elements come together and a picture just works. Sometimes you just know at the time and sometimes you’re oblivious and then surprised when you start editing your work.

The other inspiration is to do with story telling. There is something within us all that is drawn to stories. I like to think that my photographs tell stories whether it be a scene that’s captured or just the look in someones eyes. Below is a selection of photos from last years wedding day stories……
